Lions rookie Smith learns lesson at training camp

ALLEN PARK — Kevin Smith learned an important lesson for a rookie running back in his first day of training camp with the Detroit Lions.

Smith ran with an upright style at Central Florida. He carried 450 times and led the NCAA in rushing last year, but he’ll have to alter his style to survive in the pros.

“You’ve got to get low,” Smith said after practicing in pads for the first time Thursday morning. “It’s not only recommended, but it’s demanded.”

An upright style exposes a back to heavy hits, creating a risk of injury.

“Yeah, and I do run upright,” Smith said. “It’s probably going to take a couple more times for me to get knocked on my butt to fix it. I don’t get discouraged. It’s the first day of practice in the NFL.”

Smith and veteran Tatum Bell are the top contenders to start at tailback. The Lions ranked 31st in the league in rushing last year.

“Everybody’s on the same page,” Smith said. “All the running backs are coming out here making it a priority to finish runs and try to be explosive.”

CONTRACT UPDATE: Linebacker Jordon Dizon , a second-round draft pick from Colorado, was the only player missing from camp. Contract negotiations were continuing. It was possible that he would be signed before the afternoon practice.

HEALTH WATCH: Four players were put on the physically-unable-to-perform list Thursday morning. The designation prevents them from practice with the team. They can be added to the active roster at any time in camp.

Players on PUP are tight end Dan Campbell (elbow), wide receiver Shaun McDonald (knee), safety Daniel Bullocks (knee) and guard Edwin Mulitalo (elbow).

Their injuries aren’t serious, and all four players are expected to be activated soon.

Ford Motor Co. said today its operations lost $1.38 billion in the second quarter as high gasoline prices drove consumers away from its big trucks. The company earned $258 million during the same quarter of 2007.

Car Disgust–2003 Chevrolet Malibu

little over a month ago, I submitted the fourth-generation Chevrolet
Malibu (or Chevrolet Classic, if you prefer) as a potential Car
Disgust. The post was an emotional, incoherent rant detailing all of
the abuses that my significant other and I had experienced at the hands
of the very car shown to the right. Thankfully, Chris never published
my screed, which has given me time to hone my incoherent rant into what
I hope will be an incisive, invective-filled diatribe worthy of being
published as a true Car Disgust.

2010 Ford Mustang To Debut at LA Auto Show [2010 Ford Mustang]

Earlier today, when Ford announced plans to counter its largest ever quarterly loss, we also learned the 2010 Ford Mustang would be revealed to pumping bass and epileptic-unfriendly lights at the 2008 LA Auto Show in November. We know the car arrives in showrooms early next year, and what’s a new car without the lasers and dry ice of an auto show unveiling? But why LA and not Detroit?

Our sources tell us the reason the Giugiaro concept-based ‘Stang is coming to LA is partly due to the lucrative convertible market represented by sunny California, but also because it offers Ford the opportunity to become the star of the show. Despite being located in the civilized world, LA is still eclipsed by Detroit’s NAIAS, which sees a huge number of new models unveiled each year. By unveiling the Mustang in LA, Ford hopes to guarantee more coverage.

It also looks like we’ll be getting three models at the unveiling, as described in Ford’s press release:

• New Ford Mustang - coupe, convertible, and glass-roof models - in early 2009

No word on which engines we’ll be seeing, but our fingers are firmly crossed for an Eco-Boost-equipped 300 HP 2010 Ford Mustang SVO.
