I’m one of more than 30,000 people who put down a refundable $99 deposit for a smart, the two-seat, small-S micro-compact from Mercedes-Benz. I’ll take a red convertible, I said, with heated black leather seats, a clock and rain-sensing wipers. I even tacked on a $160 anti-theft alarm system, though I’m not sure it works if four guys just pick the car up and carry it away.
